My guess is probably just bad luck. I highly recommend that you look into one of the fog light cover products that are out there. On my 98 BMW I used a 3M product named Stongard or something like that. I believe that Griots Garage also has some similar products.
Incidentally, I've replaced 3 foglights in 3 years now. On 3 different cars actually. Bummer, especially considering that you can't get a new lens but, as you know, need the whole assembly which costs ~$120 or something at invoice. I've heard of some dealers charging $150+ for these.

FYI: in 10 months with my Aero, I've replaced 1 tire, patched 1 tire, replaced 2 bent "Klingon" wheels, a new chin spoiler, 1 fog light and had an alignment done. I hate to say it but they were all things that "just happen." Still one hell of a bummer.
