I have a 94 9000 CDE and a 99 9-5 SE sedan and 00 9-5 SE wagon. The 9-5 is much more refined but some people don't like that. I would say the 9-5 rides better but because it is heavier, seems to be a bit more sluggish in the handling department. Personally, when I drive the 9000, I can't wait to get back in the 9-5.
I believe the resale on the 9-5 will be better but that may mean you may also pay more initially.
Saab has been having some very good leases so a real smart way to go is to lease for three years and then buy. Buying a used car usually means paying premium interest rates. I leased my wagon for what was essentially about a 2.5% interest rate and some people have done better than that. If you think you might want to buy the car you lease, then lease for as high a milage figure as you can (stay just under the warranty milage if you can) which will leave you a lower residual to pay off and you will get the benefit of a lower interest rate on a larger sum of money. Also don't lease longer than 3 years or the interest rate will go up substantially. If you think you might want to lease, go to Edmunds.com and learn all you can before you lease.
