heater ground is SUPPLIED from ECU in an altering fashion.
Depending on how hot or cold the engine is, the ECU supply different amount of ground to heating element.

There is NO signal ground at O2 sensor, since it doesn't need one.

The sensor is producing it's own voltage signal by heating up the metals inside sensor, and depending on the fuel mixture the voltage signal is either high or low.

The 4th wire on a 4 wire sensor is a secondary signal added with OBD2 emission control. Kind of a back up system, but not quiet.

On some cars, the grey wire from front and rear sensor are spliced in together before they enter the ECU. So they use a middle value from front and rear, to determine if the black wire is correct in its signal.

In one of the later motor magazines, is a lenghty article about these new O2 sensors, and that you cannot measure the signal right at the sensor anymore, but have to use a scan tool to read the sensor value AFTER that the ECU have processed front/rear sensor and black/grey wires.
