Kevin,
Based upon experience, stay away from ANY extended warranty unless it is a GM extended warranty. There is a ton of fine print in most of these contracts that will say something to the effect that if they find ANY sludge in the oil pan they will not honor the warranty. How do I know this - we just went through this experience with my sons 95 NG 900SE Conv.
The dealer did an outstanding job of getting this resolved, but it was a real pain and until real recently, it looked like we were going to pay the bill of 2,500+ to have the enine repaired.
We do have a GM PP on my wife's Tahoe, which is a good warranty, but I am still in the original Manufacturers warranty for my 9/5.
My suggestion, save the 2K for the extended warranty, and each month put 100 or 200 in a savings account set up for repairs. This way, rather than buy the warranty for about 2K, you can collect interest on the money that you will be setting aside for ANY future repair bills. Consider the amount you are putting into this account part of your car payment (If you are not paying cash for the car), and you will be better off in the long run! And besides, if you never use the money, when you get rid of the car - you can take a real nice vacation with that money rather than make some 3rd party richer who will not honor the warranty! Just my 2 pennies worth!
