Just Bought 1999 9-5 2.3lpt Posted by Scotty [Email] (#7352) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Scotty) on Tue, 28 Jan 2003 16:08:48 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi, I'm the current onwner of a 93 9kna 126kmi and 97 900t 46kmi. I just bought a 99 9-5 auto 2.3lpt 81kmi, cloth interior. I paid $10,650. These are the things I knew were wrong when I bought it:
It was obviously leaking oily fluid at the cooler lines that go into the back of the rad on the passenger side, 2 keys, but only one working w/no remotes, a slight left-right-left-right shimmy in the steering wheel between 20-30mph that goes away at higher speeds, and no service history past 2/2001 at 41kmi.
Otherwise everything else works perfectly with perfectly clean interior, shiny paint w/no dings, dents, scratches, smooth quiet ride (one exception below), and surprisingly good power (as an aside, I raced my wife, me in the 97 900t auto trans, her in the 9-5, and she was able to keep up pretty well in straight line acceleration.)
What I didn't know was wrong was that when you hit moderate to hard bumps at high speed, it feels like the whole rear end "scoots" quickly out from under you to the side. It's a VERY un-nerving sensation and feels like you're gonna totally lose control for a sec. I later checked the shocks more closely (after I bought it) and realized the right rear was completely shot. I'm a little hesitant to believe that one bad damper could cause such scary handling, though, and I'm worried it's something worse.
The dealer confirmed the shock is gone and thinks this is the cause of the crazy handling over bumps. I've given them the go-ahead to replace both rear shock inserts, they re-balanced the wheels and tell me that has cured the shimmy (I won't get it back till tomorrow), they replaced the seals on the tranny fluid lines going into the cooler and say this stopped the oil leak, and I'm buying two remotes and they said they can re-program the non-functional key.
Costs as follow:
$240 oil cooler line leaks fixed
$545 replace both rear strut cartridges
$244 for two new remotes
$30 to re-program remotes and balky key
$25 to re-program to cancel day-time running lights
$58 to balance 4 wheels (yikes!!)
Thats a grand total of $1,142 + $10,650 = $11,792.
Is that a fair value for what I got, in your opinions'?
Do you think the dealier diagnosed it properly and that one bad rear shock would really cause such scary handling?
I was expecting the shimmy to be out-of-round wheels and thinking I'd have to fork up big dough for rims...do you think re-balancing the wheels can cure that?
Thanks for your opinions!
