Hi Aero'ed,
As the blade edge wears, the rubber in contact with the glass holds more minute pieces of sand and acts as a fine grade sand paper... as it passes over the pits that occur from normal stone strikes, the edges of the pit get elongated which exagerates the distortion. I might better have used the term scratching and pitting with respect to the action of suboptimal wipers. That's why I wipe the blade edge repeatedly every time I wash the windows. This problem is getting worse as the quality of auto glass goes down. My Saab's windshield seems particularly soft - not to mention how wavy it is. You can feel the undulations as you wipe the windshield.
Best,
Eric
