Why are you comparing NEW v. USED (even though its slightly used?).
Also, what are your top 5 requirements in looking for a car? Might help you make the decision.
I haven't driven a Passat in 3 years, so it is hard for me to give you good (recent) data points. Some things to think about:
1) I think 9-5 has more passenger room, but Passat has about 1 cu ft more cargo room.
2) 4WD - good if you need it. So VW is good here.
3) Build quality/luxury - from what I've seen, the edge goes to Saab- but NOT by much. Seats are definetly superior in the Saab v. the VW.
4) Ride, handling. Saab will get the edge here (especially if you want a firmer, tighter ride)
5) Scheduled maintenance for first 3 years is paid for by Saab (not sure about VW)
6)ANECDOTAL INPUT: From what others have told me VW service/dealers are not that great.
7) Appearance: Subjective - I like the overall lines of the Saab, vs the "lower price version of Audi" looks of the Passat.
8) Gas Mileage - Probably better in the Saab.
9) Engine - not sure if the V6 is the VR6 variant. I've heard this engine has some long term reliability problems. The Saab 4 banger is a tank (just like the 4cyl Volvo).
Just some food for thought. The Passat is a nice car. VW clearly thought this thru when it was introduced, and probably incorporated some learnings from Audi.
Also, did you consider looking at the Volvo V70 or Subaru (if you want 4wd), or a used A6? You can probably get a great deal on 2000 A6 wagons coming off lease!
Good luck. In the end you won't make a wrong decision....
