The Cleveland auto show had as you mentioned just a small kiosk. The cars were provided by the three local dealerships which amounted to about eight cars in too big of an area. Volvo had a similar set up where the dealerships donated vehicles for displays. I asked about seeing the third row seat in the Volvo wagon but the representative that the dealer did not provide them with any and that they are usually a special order item. And I thought only GM was into the marketing hype.
Now step over to Audi. A little smaller floor area but cars well represented. Even an S8 and S4 sedan and wagon but no TT or Z8. Just walking into the area and bouncing in there thick carpet was telling you something was different. Audi does have Fred Baker Audi/Porsche backing them. And Fred regularly races a prepared Porsche at the Valovine Runoffs here at Mid-Ohio and usually wins.
So it looks like the level of involvement by the local dealerships play a big factor in at what vehicles are present at the shows.
