You need to have a service tech diagnose the A/C system with a manifold gauge set to see what the system pressures are. The compressor may be locked out by a low pressure switch if the refrigerant charge is gone. The refrigerant charge normally leaks out anywhere from 3 to 7 years as a rule (I'm in the refrigerant business) and will normally need two recharges in the 12 year design life of the A/C system, so you are not out of the normal life of the charge. If the system had a sudden loss of charge you could be looking at a significant problem such as a failed shaft seal on the compressor or a punctured condensor from a road hazard. Hope it is just a simple leak and recharge situation.
The tech may choose to put an ultraviolet leak check dye in the system if there is no obvious leak when he diagnoses it. You may need to go back after a couple of weeks so he can shine a UV light under the hood and see if any dye has leaked through. This is very effective at finding any small leaks in the system.
