'99 is frequently flagged as a problem year, and after that, it seems to be a better than average car. Service people that I've asked say it is the most reliable car that Saab has made. If not a new one, tried to get a "certified" one from a dealer which comes with a SAAB warranty.
The DI failures appear to be scarey but infrequent. I've had 7 SAAB's, now have a 2003 wagon, and love it. Consider the wagon if you need space - it handles better than the sedan (NOT like an old fashioned wagon) and holds an awesome amount of stuff, including supplied roof rails that hold up to 200 lbs (eg., 3 bikes on racks and a kayak).
SAAB's i have known go bad when you get incomeptent service, because it's kind of a specilty car, like a BMW or Mercedes, so cast around for good service 9like on this board) befoire you buy.
