I took delivery of a '01 9-5 ten days ago and OnStar was activated that afternoon, but as yet it isn't fully operational.
Days 1-8: Used OnStar once for directions -- very helpful. Also used it to call Customer Care six times because Personal Calling was not functioning.(Pressing button did nothing)
Days 9-10: Personal Calling (paritally)working -- pressing button started system and it responded to voice prompts. Could not complete calls or receive incoming calls...nothing but error messages from local cell companies.
Day 11: Personal Calling still not fixed. Now Onstar triggers error messages from local cell companies.
Seven calls to OnStar Customer Care thusfar. Four promises to call back with status reports not kept. Five promises to have it fixed in two days not honored....AND this morning the Customer Care rep said it would be two days before they could give me a status update...and no information as to when it might be fixed.
I am REALLY glad that I did not choose to pay extra for this service. (If it were an option, I doubt I would have bought it. I'm beginning to doubt whether I will actually pay to renew my subscription after the first free year. AND...I don't think I'll depend on them to help me in the event of an emergency!
Maybe they should change their marketing literature:
"Imagine you are away from home and you have an accident. If your airbag deploys, OnStar may or may not be notified, an OnStar representative may or may not try to call you, and may or may not dispatch emergency medical personnel to your location."
"In the event you or a loved one needs emergency assistance, just press the red button and OnStar is ready to help: "(Screech) Message AG...if you are trying to make a call, please use your keypad (pause) ...there is no record of your cellular system on our network...please hang up...."
