Back-up lights:
Heck if I know. I don't think the extra wattage would cause a significant heat problem, since the lights are only on for a brief time. I suspect the circuit would handle the extra load ok.
Hella used to make a slick little flush mounted halogen floodlight that might work really well if you could figure out a suitable spot to mount it in the hatch and did not shy from whacking a big hole in the sheel metal. Care to experiment? ;)

"HID bulbs":
Don't kid yourself - these are not HID. A real HID system will cost $1000 USD or more. These colored bulbs may be an improvement over the stock halogen bulbs (I doubt it) but they are in no way equivalent to HID other than in color. IMHO they are marketed for their looks rather than their actual performance. OTH, they probably won't hurt much either.
My real objection is to real aftermarket HID kits that people install in lamp housings that were never designed for them. The result is blinded and pissed-off drivers. Factory HID housings have special reflector shapes and self levelling circuits to prevent this.
