Playing around with the fader, I too have noticed that the rear is less crisp, more muted or dull sound. Personally, it doesn't bother me at all and I've only noticed it when I'm playing with the fader and have it over 30% of the way to the rear.
As for the part failure - It's definitely not normal but relability for 9-5's has been pretty good and assuming they fixed it right, I wouldn't worry. Their comment about it being shifted wrong worries me a bit considering few people should have driven it and even then they should have known how to work it. You'd really have to abuse the thing to cause a failure in less than 100 miles, I'd think. In any case, you are under warranty for 4/48 (assuming your're in the US) so I wouldn't worry much anyway. Incidentally, I returned a Saturn after 2 weeks because the transmission keep popping out of gear. They gave me a 2nd one, identically equipped and I never had a problem with it. I'm not saying that you should have the same expectations of both Saturn and Saab but sometimes they just come from the factory with problems. Also, my Saturn had never really been driven at all (plastic still on seats when I drove it - something like 10 miles or so on the odo).
Personally, I'd just keep an eye on things. There's not much you can do.
I hope you enjoy your 9-5. I certainly do.
