Catherine,
As I am SAAB bias, as most who frequent this forum, I think it best you get out on slippery conditions to validate 4 wheel vs 2 wheel with the add on electronic assists available today.
This can be done several ways, but hopefully it is next fall at the earliest. In the past I have shared my desires with several local dealers to test their 4 wheel drive in slippery conditions. When it snowed they came over and picked me up and I got to tool around in a parking lot with their 4 wheel versions and 2 wheel drive with assist versions. The other way is to test out friends and family vehicles if they are so inclined to let you.
What I validated is what I had always thought true, the driver is the most important factor in the vehicles ability to handle the conditions.
Case in point is a business trip I was on going to Boston. Co-worker was driving a late model 4 wheel drive vehicle and it was starting to snow. I questioned if we should go but Jack assured me and the other 2 passengers he was fine and that with his 4 wheel drive he can go through anything, no issues. One hour into the 2 and a half hour trip Jack has continued to go faster as the conditions continued to deteriorate. At this point all in the car are nicely questioning Jack on how are the conditions, it seems the cars all around us have slowed considerably, etc. Jack took it as a challenge or his testosterone was on hyper drive for he would not slow. As we aproached a perfectly flat bridge Jack touched the brakes, why no one knows, and we started 360 degree turns over and over and over again.
When the car finally stopped I got out of the pasenger seat with the car key, walked around the front of the car, and kicked him out. Jack sat in the passenger seat, and I am sure it was with brown underwear, quiet for the rest of the ride up and back. I returned his keys when we returned to our office at night and Jack was never allowed to drive when I was in the car again.
