Past discussions on earlier 2.3s indicate that 87 octane will not harm the engine, but will also not run as clean, and the mpg will be down 6-8% or so, as opposed to the mid-grade recommened.
If you think about it, for the increase in porice, you will have a hiugher mpg, thereby using less gas, and the math in my case based on differentials hewre actually means less expenditure on 89 octane (I am not so committed as to mix 90 by hand). And, you will also create less emissions, both by using less gas and burning it better.
This seems like a straight-forward choice.
