Last night, I installed Saab molded mud flaps/splash guards on our new 9-5 sedan, and I thought I would post a few tips that might help others attempting the same thing.
1. Drilling is required, but all holes are drilled in plastic, not metal, which is a good thing.
2. You have to remove the rear wheels to install the rear flaps, but the rear installation is easy once this is done.
3. You don't have to remove the front wheels, just turn them to full lock for access, but you do have to jack up the front to drill one hole on the bottom of the fender liner, unless you have some kind of right-angle drill.
4. You have to pull the bottom of the front fender liner away from the fender edge to install the clips in two holes, but it comes away fairly easily and pops back in.
5. The front installation instructions say to replace the screw you remove from the wheel well with one supplied in the package. The hex-head screw in the package is identical to the one that was on the car, so I just re-used the original screw in its hole, and used the other hex-head screw (with an attached washer) in the other bottom hole.
6. The front instructions say to put a piece of "sturdy tape" on the fender edge, but the instructions don't say why or show exactly where the tape is supposed to go. All I could figure out was that the tape is to protect the edge of the metal fender from contacting the clip that you have to insert into the fender liner for one of the holes you drilled. That's what I did.
7. In general, the installation was pretty easy, but the instructions are fairly cryptic and the "English" is a little hard to understand.
8. The mud flaps appear well-designed and look nice, and they should help with gravel, road tar, and the like. They're pretty subtle, not like the flaps that came standard on our old Saab 99 (and, as I recall, on all Saabs of that vintage and earlier, which used to have a large "SAAB" logo on the rear flaps.
