Avalon holds its own against Aero

This past weekend I was driving on a lightly traveled freeway in my 2000 Aero wagon (auto) when a car (a 2001 Toyota Avalon) pulled behind me rather abruptly (I was in the left lane with a few cars in the right). In order to let him pass, I accelerated to pass the cars in in the right lane so that I could change lanes. However, while accelerating I noticed that he also decided to speed up with full throttle. It appeared as if I had my first chance to play with the Aero in a pretty safe environment (at this point the freeway was deserted with the exception of our two cars), so I played along and continued at full throttle for a while. To my great surprise, I was barely able to pull away from the other car. We did this a couple of times from 80-110. While I did have all my windows and sunroof fully open, I thought that I should have been able to distance myself from him a little more. At around 110 I closed all the windows and sunroof and took it up to around 130-140 and he fell significantly behind. I then slowed down and he passed by and we exchanged friendly waves. So my question is how much of an impact did the open windows have in my sluggish performance? Prior to this exercise, I thought that they would have had a minimal impact, however it now appears that I am wrong. Otherwise my Aero is the slowest one built. Either way, it looks like it is time for the Nordic upgrade.
