I bet the steering shaft rubber boot came loose. This problem was outlined in a dealer letter. Although, not your complaint exactly, it's a good place to start. See below:
Reference: Addressing a customer complaint of engine/exhaust noise - 1999-2001 9-5 V6 models
Should a customer complain of engine noise, or more specifically, exhaust noise, from a cold engine or when turning a corner, please check the boot that seals the steering rack to the firewall.
We have found a torn boot around the steering rack column that seals it to the body to promote these complaints. To check for a torn boot, begin by pulling the driver's floor carpeting from around the steering shaft. Shine a bright light from under the car at the column area while an assistant looks from inside the car. If any light can be seen, replace the boot P/N 50 60 850 ( this will require lowering the subframe).
Thank you for your attention.
Sincerely,
Rich Miller
