Note, the 2002 suspension changes intro'd an aluminum front hub to save wieght. So the hub could not longer be welded to the strut tube. The advantage of the welded design was that the camber would not change much at all, but you could not change it either. With the new design the strut-shock body mounts to the hub with two heavy pinch bolts. This can allow things to move with perhaps a really bad pot hole etc. With the new design, new struts means a big time alignment for camber, centering and toe. With the old design, you replace the strut insert and put things back and the alignment does not change and you are good to go.
2002 also intro'd many other suspension refinements. Saving weight up front was part of the effort to get the weight down to better accomodate the heavy turbo diesel engine used in Eurpope.
