Steve
I upgraded the springs first in 1999 (shocks weren't available yet). I went with B+G from the Netherlands. They are a decent spring and reasonable price. Eliminated the majority of body roll and front end dive with braking. This past fall I upgraded the shocks to Bilstein Sports. They are stiffer, but not overly harsh. Corners are very flat.
Springs alone had the greatest effect on roll motion. Shocks eliminated the over-rebound that sometimes occurred following a dip - result of the stiffer spring.
One note: I just went to a 17-inch wheel and now get occasional wheel rub at the fender/body lip with a major bump, more often if also turning. I was running 225/50-16 with no problem. Now have 225/45-17 and get it occasionally. No damage to the tire, I just hear it once or twice each day.
