hi there,
i live in LA and want to use my new (to me) 3 year old aero to buzz up to Mammoth and Big Bear in the winter. by thanksgiving at the latest, i will also need a new set of tires.
after a perusal of the previous threads, it seems like there's some confusion (thanks to Saab it appears) and debate.
as best as i can tell, the mother ship recommends AGAINST the use of 17" aero wheels in the snow, perhaps because the narrow sidewalls mean there is not enough give to them? i will be doing maybe 15-20 hours of driving a year in the snow, but i also want to be safe and protect my new baby (i'll leave it up to you as to whethere i refer to my new infant and my car or both).
california requires CHAINS in any moderately snow conditions so the wheels HAVE to be able to accept them or, alternatively, spikes spiders.
the options would seem to be :
1. get a set of Continental ContiExtremeContact 17" and a spikes spider set. this would seem to work on the 17" wheels. drive these year round.
2. get a set of Continental ContiExtremeContact, 16" rims from tirerack, spikes spider, and keep the BBS rims for the other may-november driving after outfitting them with michelin pilots or something else for summer touring/sport.
3. get a set of Continental ContiExtremeContact, 15" rims, and the approved saab chains plus the summer tires as above. given how much spikes spider costs (around 300), this may be cheaper than option 1.
any comments? how are the contiextremecontacts for dry summer driving (which is most of the time here)? on paper, this seems like a compromise, which i am always wary of...
