Hi,
I'm honestly not trolling for some sort of flame war, but I'd like some people's opinions on replacement tires for my Aero. I noticed the other day that I have a very slight bubble on the side-wall of one of the Michellin's that are on the car now. I believe these are the OEM Michele sport's (or whatever) that came origial equipment with the '00 Aero in the US, although I don't think they're the exact tires that were on the car when it left the dealer lot new. This car has 43K miles and there's too much thread left on these tires for them to be 'original'. I've read some reviews on tirerack.com about these tires and have heard they get 'bubbles' and blow out a lot, probably requiring the original owner of this vehicle to have replaced some of them along the way.
Anyway, does anyone have any suggestions. TireRack has some Yohohama AVS ES100's which are much cheaper than their average tires ($428 / set of four). Are these decent tires? I just started a new job and I'm in the process of moving so I don't have any disposable income to dump into high-end tires. TireRack's best-sellers for the Aero are some Bridgestone Potenza S-03 Pole Position ($664 / set of four), Continental ContiExtreme Contact ($424), Pirelli PZero Nero (500 / set of four).
Also I've never bought tires online before and I'm wondering what were people's experience. I'm guessing because this is an online purchase there won't be sales tax right? Is it more trouble than it's worth or is it a good deal. Maybe if someone has opinions on tirerack.com in particular that might be useful to me. I've tried reading the reviews on TireRack of particular tires but I've found them almost useless due to the completely different opinions on most of the tires. For most tires you can find people who give detailed descriptions of how tire 'x' completely sucks, and you can find someone else with an equally detailed description of how tire 'x' is the great tire that was ever made and I'd be an idiot not to chose it. In the end I still know the same - nothing.
As far as my tire useage goes. I'm not the kind of guy who will take his car to the track. I drive probably like the average Aero driver :) but in general I take it easy to keep the fuel economy decent. I plan on putting dedicated winter tires/rims on the car later this year as I live on the East Coast. I guess a general purpose all-weather would be okay.
Thanks in advance for the advice,
Kevin
