bRAD,
The history on this is that when I first got my '00 Aero I was disappointed with the stereo, it didn't sound as good as the system in the car it replaced, a '91 Alfa 164S. That system was IIRC 6 speaker and the head unit was straight out of a Chrysler. I played around with the bass, fader and treble and got it to an acceptable sound on my favorite classical music but it was still flat when playing my wife's favorite '70s/'80s rock. After reading about the "Start Volumn" thing on another web site, I reset it to 26 and found that I could then return the bass, fader and treble back to their nominal settings and everything sounded good.
It was explained on that web site (Edmunds), by somebody that appeared to know what they were talking about, that the "Start Volumn" is actually the "Gain" and what setting it up accomplished was rasing the maximum volumn that the peaks in the music could hit without being cut off. The louder you like to listen to music, the more apparent the improvement became.
By the bye, there is no change in the volumn when you set this up other than what you hear for about 5 seconds after you finish the adjustment. When you exit from the setup, the volumn is the same as it was before you started. The only difference is that you have raised the point where loud peaks in the music are cut off and this adds a whole bunch of "livelyness" to the music.
