on late model cars are mostly are professional resellers who buy at the wholesale auction and "flip" the cars quickly. They get the "problem cars" - maybe the car shows some damage, maybe it's maintenance history is questionalbe, maybe it's just high mileage - for whatever reason, it isn't a candidate for "certified pre-owned" and so it escapes from the dealer track and into the netherworld. The "buy it now" price you see is usually within a hundred or so of the "reserve price." According to an upcoming NINES story, most of these cars get sold on "buy it now", and another large percentage go after the auction at a negotiated price between the seller and the active bidders.
I checked out one of those cars for a reader. It was an OK car - '2000 Aero sedan. It went like stink - plenty of zip, and everything felt tight on the car. The car was cheap too, like $12,000. What was it's problem? Over 80,000 miles on the clock, "square" wheels, and snow tires that howled and boomed like you wouldn't believe. A new set of rims and tires, an alignment, and that car would be a sweet deal for someone.
