I agree that the Nokian WR is probably your best choice if he encounters regular moderately heavy snow throughout the winter.
If he will be encountering only random light snows, some of the summer/performance tires will do an OK job. Michelin Pilot Sport A/S and Toyo Proxes FZ4 are two that would suffice.
I use Nokians for winter tires and am very happy with them (Toyo's for summer) but Nokian's limited distribution within the US could be a problem depending where your son goes to Medical school.
