John---actually, outside the city streets, most motorcyclists still acknowledge each other, either with a low wave of the left hand, or lifting a few fingers off the grip. That is, unless they are (1) on a divided freeway and can't see each other, or (2) Harley riders. BMW riders are almost 100% on this; some of the younger riders on "crotch rockets" don't go along (maybe they don't dare let go with one hand!).
When I drove a BMW 1600 (car, not motorcycle!), the daytime high beam flash to other BMW's was universal acknowledgement of our common ground and mutual good taste. After I bought my first Saab in 1972, this never happened again. I sort of missed it.
I still have yet to see another Saab driver wave or flash lights. Actually I've yet to see another 9-5 while I was driving mine. The 900 drivers apparently don't recognize my 9-5 as a Saab.
