Just to verify:
1. Radio off
2. Press and hold down the SEEK button in the midsegment (your finger should be pressing down exactly where SEEK is printed)
3. Turn the radio on; release the SEEK button
You should see a difference in the frequency stepping of the radio; in European mode, AM radio steps in increments of 9 kHz (for example, 774 kHz, 783 kHz, 792 kHz...)
In North American mode, AM should step in 10 kHz increments: 880, 890, 900, etc.
If, after you get it into North American mode, it still doesn't work, I guess your radio needs repair? Or maybe the radio is not seated properly in its cage and thus the antenna connection isn't optimal.
Are you able to easily catch weather band on other WB radios in your area? (Try Radio Shack)
As someone else suggested, maybe you're in a weak service area?
