After much bickering with my indie (Saabtech in Chicago), they agreed to take the red DI cassette out and replace it with a black one.
They came up with every excuse in the book for why a red DI cassette was in my car: First, it was that they were "identical to the black ones except for color". Then, it was that they had put the red DI in to move it around on their lot and at since it was running, the job was considered "done". Then it was that the red DI was cheaper than the black DI, which would save me - the customer - money. The it was that they "don't have a lot of 9-5s on the lot so [they] don't stock that part anyway."
Excuses, excuses, excuses. This would have never happened had they called to ask me if I was ok with them installing a red DI.
Regardless, and for what it's worth.... the car ran fine with the red DI cassette in there. I put 250 trouble-free miles on it and everything worked just fine. I just felt more comfortable (as I'm sure most everyone on this msg board is) with the black DI cassette in there instead.
Finally, I have to say that the failure of this part represents a real loss of my faith in the Saab brand. My 9-5 is running fine now and has no problems. I'm considering selling it while it's running well, because I'm really questioning whether or not it will do that for much longer. I have seen a lot of posts about 9-5s having problems with DI cassettes, idler pulleys / serp belts, SID units, throttle body, etc... all problems I had with my last Saab (a NG900) as well and I have to wonder if Saab really cares about addressing these quality concerns. I'm getting ready to go to graduate school and cannot afford to have a car which has me questioning every mile it drives. I just wish I could think of a fun, reliable, cheap car as a replacement - because I'm sure I'm not going to be able to get much more than $10,500 for my 9-5 if I sell it (yay depreciation). It's just that the concepts of "fun" and "cheap" seem to be mutually exclusive when it comes to cars.
Anyway, there's my rant of the day. All thoughts, especially on a new ride, would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Stephen / sph3re
