No doubt, at altitude the turbo is king and I'm sure the Aero might waste the 540i at 6,000 plus feet. However down here at sea level where I live, the 540 does 0-60 in 5.8 seconds whereas the best I've seen on my 9-5 V6 is 7.6 seconds - and that's a lot of difference! Both cars were tested using the same G-Tech, calibrated first, on the same road with the same driver. Yes, an Aero manual may do better but I doubt it will break 6.5 sec. to 60 - still a lot of difference. At higher speeds, the 540 is also very strong but since top gear is very high (34 MPH/1000 rpm), a kickdown is needed to 3rd or 4th for best results. None the less, I'm amazed by how effortlessly this car achieves big speeds.
Surprisingly, my overall gas mileage is similar on both cars about 20mpg on the 5'er 21 on the 9-5. Before the BMW I had a 9-5 lpt 4 (170 hp) and averaged 22 mpg on that, so the gas penalty is not great for the V8 with my type of driving.
