questions about DI failures

I have a '99 5spd and take it on many trips (almost all of the 59K are highway miles). People keep saying that the DI could fail at 60mph. What exactly would happen if it did fail while you were on the highway? You just lose power all power steering and power brakes? Is this accurate? What about w/ the stick...does that mean that the car is going to buck abruptly b/c the engine and tranny will still be in contact w/ one another (until you press the clutch in). This sounds kind of scary... Thanks for your posts.
Also, I want to invest into an extra DI...where have you (the members of this board) been buying them? I know I could go to the dealer, but there are also vendors on ebay that carry them, as well. Is this a good idea, or no? Thanks, again.
