is that you wait until you hear a squeaking/grinding sound from the front brakes (assuming you want to maximize the time used and are going to replace the rotors anyway). There's brake wear indicators that'll hit the rotor and make a noise. Then you go in (immediately) and have rotors and pads replaced.
For what it's worth, I did a front brake job at less than 30,000 miles -- new pads (EBC greenstuff) and new OEM rotors (I own a Viggen and like the slotted rotors). It cost me about $300 just in parts.
