Name this sound....and win my thanks.

My '01 Aero Wagon has had a funny noise since about 500 miles. It currently has 1700 miles. At the 30 day Inspection the tech looked for the source of the noise, but "could not find anything wrong".
The sound is a faint "tip-tip-tap-tippety-tap" from the left front wheel area. It is most obvious when driving slowly with the engine unloaded - right at that On/Off throttle transition between accelerating and coasting. It takes about 20 minutes of driving before the noise will start - it definitely doesn't do it cold. If you drive 25 mph and put the tranny in neutral, the sound is still there, but less frequent.
Also, if you lock the brakes, select first gear, and let the clutch out slowly with the engine running, it will make a single "tip" as the clutch starts to engage. It does this every time. And once as I exited the car and closed the driver's door, and distinctly heard a creak or tapping from the left front wheel area. When I kicked the top of the tire, it did it again. I haven't been able to duplictate that again...this is really strange.
I suspect a bad driveshaft CV joint. Any other guesses? I am going to take the car back to the dealer next week and demonstrate the noise to him. I am not really confident that they can fix it, unless it starts to get worse. I am going to be leaving on a 3000 mile trip in about a month - I really do not want something to break halfway this side of nowhere.
TIA.
