Love the 5-speed, but...... Posted by andy [Email] (#759) [Profile/Gallery] (more from andy) on Fri, 1 Jun 2001 11:18:55 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
OK, here's the deal:
Drove 5-speed manual and it was a lot of fun, but the automatic is great, too, and I just don't see myself wanting to pound along shifting gears for 20k a year. So, here's my question for the cognoscenti on this board!!! ;)
I noticed that, according to the sticker on each vehicle (both 2001s), the 5-speed tranny is made in Sweden but the automatic comes from Japan.
What gives?
I asked the salesperson and he claimed the automatic is made by Asiat-Warner (SIC?), a division of Borg-Warner, and it's the same tranny that's in certain Lexus models (he didn't know which ones, of course), albeit with different settings. This makes sense in certain respects as Toyota and GM do have some ties (i.e., Geo, which is about all I know about but perhaps there are others). From what I understand, GM also owns Isuzu, Suzuki and a piece of Subaru.
Anyone know whether my salesguy was correct, especially on the interesting tidbit that this same automatic is in certain Lexus models? Which models, I wonder? If so, is the likely reliability of this tranny far better than prior SAAB-built autos in the 9000 series (presuming they built their own, which I don't know)?
Thanks in advance for taking the time to share your thoughts!!!
