If reliability is your thing and you care about nothing else. I would not recommend a Saab. Go get a Toyota. I have two 9-5's and my first 9-5 convinced me to buy a 9-3 and a 9000. Why? Safety foremost. I no longer worry about my wife and two daughters. (See my posts on Saab real life safety). Second, performance. Third, utility. Fourth, class and fifth. believe it or not, durability. Notice I said durability not reliability. My 9-5 with 40K miles looks in remarkable condition because it is made with high quality materials. Sixth, I like the way it looks.
Has my 9-5 been a reliability headache? Sorta. The 99's seem to be the ones with the most bugs, especially the ECU and Displays. The ECU has been the problem that has turned most people off to the 9-5. The replacement ECU seems to be working. Saab apparantly has a very good reputation for upgrading a part that isn't working.
But if you get a bad dealer like I have, it can be a real pain. If you have a good dealer, I wouldn't worry so much. Saab dealers who primarily sell Saab as their marque have a very good reputation and generally replace the problem parts before you have a problem.
