Ian, the coil on plug setups I am most familiar with (Japanese) cars, are typically made by Hitachi and sell for about $ 80. They have a reputation for being very reliable. Do not know what is going on with American brands, but paying $ 700 to have a simple ignition coil replaced strikes me as not sounding quite right.
Now a Hitachi coil at $ 80 x 4 cyl. = $ 320, bout the cost you stated for a Saab DI, which besides coils would have an oscillator, 480V pwr supply, charge capacitors, and firing (gate) components. Seemingly quite the bargain, however the poster above (Sten) claims that everyday off the shelf electronics are used in the DI, this certainly holds down the mfg. cost down but most likely at the trade off of reliability.
And, I would ask the question why does no other auto maker use CD technology in their ignition systems, and why is Saab dropping this type of ignition as new models are introed ?
Hard to believe a Ford ignition coil can cost over $ 100. I think one can buy a reman engine for the repair cost of the 2 coils that failed on your friends truck. I'd be very agitated with Ford.
