The frequency of oil changes is a contentious issue. But here goes. In 1988 I bought a new Eagle Premier. It had a 3.0L engine made by Volvo. The oil and filter were changed every 5K using 10W30 Quaker, Pennzoil, Valvolene or whatever the dealer was using or was on sale. At 70K, after the warranty expired, I installed Mobil 1 10W-30 synthetic oil and a new oil filter. Every 5K thereafter, I changed the oil filter and added 1 quart of Mobil 1 synthetic oil and did this until 100K at which time, all of the oil was changed and a new oil filter installed. Therafter, every 5K the oil filter was change and a quart of Mobil 1 synthetic oil was added. At 130K I switched to regular 10W-30 primarly because I was told by neighbors and back yard mechanic friends higher mileage engines simply shouldn't be using synthetic oil and eventually was badgered into believing this was a dumb tactic. I drove the car until 168K when finally the AC, interior and electrical system fell apart. The car never used oil between changes. Now I am the owner of my third Saab a recently purchased 99 9-5 2.3L Wagon with 73K. The previous owner had the car serviced regulary at the Dealer using semi-synthetic oil and so far the car is flawless. Now the issue is I am thinking of installing Mobil 1 0W40 synthetic oil and simply changing the oil filter every 5K and then adding one quart of Mobil 1 and to do this until 100K. At 100K I will completely change the oil and filter. So the issue is was I just lucky or is this a reasonable way to maintain this car.
