I happen to own a Mercury Mountaineer AWD (same as explorer) and the Firestone recall is nothing new. Ford and Firestone have been pointing fingers at each other since August 2000 when the news of the Firestone tread separation starting hitting the air waves. Ford has also recently announced that it's paying the costs for removing all Firestone Wilderness A/T's off it's vehicles currently estimated to be around 13 million additional tires.
When I purchased the Mountaineer they came with the Firestone Wilderness A/T's and I can attest that the tires were'nt worth a crap. The stock shocks were also garbage. I changed the tires to Michellin's and shocks to Edelbrock IAS and the vehicle handling characteristics were drastically improved.
Unfortunately many SUV drivers seem to think that because they're driving a four wheel drive that they can actually drive more recklessly not realizing just the opposite is true. The only advantage of driving a SUV is due to it's height, you can see over other vehicles. One must also realize that with it's higher center of gravity and weight mass you have to adjust to it's characteristics.
I also drive a Saab 9-3 SE and I am well aware to what I'm driving and adjust accordingly.
