Speed is read by the ECU from one of the back ABS sensors. The ECU converts that raw pulse signal to something to drive the speedo and the odometer. The SID gets something as well.
In 02 or 03, the dash cluster was changed. It had analog tach and speedo, these are now stepping motors. So whatever the signal was for that, it is no longer the same. I don't know if the stepping motor driver is in the instrument cluster or in the ECU. The instrument panel lights are now all LEDs too.
I have no knowledge of what the purple wires was|is.
