Trionic will protect the engine, but you will find that your mileage will drop, maybe even enough to overwhelm your at-the-pump savings.
Here in sky-high calif, I'm now paying $2.35 for our crap 91 octane premium. But as the rice goes up they don't change the approximately ten-cent increments among the grades, so the difference between regular and premium becomes a smaller percentage of the cost of a fill-up. That's a confusing way of saying it makes more sense for me to stay with premium, not less, as the price goes up.
Note that the minimum recommended octane for the V6 is higher than that for the LPT 4 due to the higher compression ratio.
