Dean, I would think that the difference in the T5 occurence of converter and DI failure might tied to numbers:
- Red DIs seem to fail significantly less, and have exhibited much higher % of incomplete, or partial failures.
- It is only under a certain set of conditions that an ignition failure will destruct the converter. When the initial poster recalled sensing a "thump" in the engine, I equate that to an explosion in the converter, destroying it. I think it all happens too quickly for the CEL to be seen:
DI craps out at cruising speed, unburnt fuel from one, maybe two injector cycles enters the exhaust stream, throttle closes (maybe), positive exhaust flow stalls, and boom converter destructs from fuel hitting the hot catalyst elements.
I just speculate that the ECU reacts to the dead DI and then shuts down the injectors and allows the throttle plate to close. I would think it unusual for the converter to destruct with positive exhaust flow (throttle open), but who knows.
