Oil Check & Syntec

I've got a '99 9-5 (2.3 auto) and one thing I have never been quite clear about:
When you check the motor oil level, are you supposed to push all the way down on the spring-loaded dipstick, or just place the dipstick in the hole without pushing down to get the correct oil level?
Also, my car has about 12,500 miles on it and I'm switching to Castrol Syntec 5w-50 motor oil from regular Penzoil 10w-30, which the dealer recommends. For some reason, the dealers don't recommend synthetics (my Land Rover dealer is the same way) even though you would think synthetics would be far superior to regular motor oil. I half suspect the dealers are afraid you won't wear out your vehicles fast enough (and buy new ones) if you use synthetics.
Anybody have any comments on Castrol Syntec or synthetics in general in their Saabs vs. regular motor oil?
Thanks,
Norm
