and judge for yourself. The '99's have been significantly improved upon.
If you're bored w/the 9-5 layout (I'm not, especially when compared the the volvo 850 we have) or the general look, the '04 will still be very similar; I think that's a good thing.
If you need a change, then you might want to hold out for the new model. My '99 has reinforced the concept of waiting for the second year of production - what about your '99? ;-) On the other hand, when the new 9-5 comes out, I bet the incentives on the end of the "old" models will be good!
I'd agree w/mike that you should be much closer to $30K than $40K.
Bottom line: What else are you interested in? Go drive them, too. Either way, you're talking enough $$ and years with your decision to spend some time researching what YOU like. I've found that I can narrow the field fairly quickly, then go for some REAL test drives to get a real sense of something I'm serious about. I understand dealers being hesitant about driving their new cars about, but I have no problem driving the same model used. It gives me a sense of how things break in, and what to be concerned about. Most dealers don't spend anything fixing problems until the car is sold. If it's something I'm interested in, I ALWAYS go back for a drive at night, too. Its important to me that I like the headlight patterns and the dash / switch visability. Let us know what you decide!
