technical electrical question (long) Posted by ken [Email] (#2113) [Profile/Gallery] (more from ken) on Sun, 6 Jun 2004 07:10:31 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I want to keep my cell phone in my car and plugged in
to the cig lighter. After a prior post here, I
received advice on how to wire the cig lighter so that
it stays live when the ignition is off (thanks to Bill and others who
sent me useful and detailed advice).
I was reluctant to do my own electrical work so I
asked my Saab dealer to do it when the car was in for
other reasons. The dealer said he took a line that is
meant to provide power to a trailer and connected it
to the line to the cig lighters (front and rear).
I then noticed that when my cell phone was plugged in
to cig lighter and charging there was noise on AM radio stations.
The dealer said that the trailer line is shared by the
power line to the radio.
Not wanting to pay big bucks for dealer labor rates,
and also to get another opinion, I went to my local
trusted service station run by someone I know well. I
asked him to connect the cig lighter to a line that
was powered with ignition off and was not shared by
the radio.
He used a line in the dash meant for a part that is
not in my model car (I think he said an air pump or
water pump). He said that it does not share a line
with the radio.
I still get interference with the radio when the phone
is charging.
Can anyone suggest a work around?
thanks in advance,
ken
