All of us who have one of the earlier 9-5's with the "Banana Key Fob" have probably asked the same question, "Why is this thing so big?" Well, today I think I discovered the answer.

A co-worker who recently traded in his 2001 9-5 for a 2004 9-3 gave me his copy of the "Saab 9-5" book by Anders Tunberg. On page 67 is a photo of the interior of a protype 9-5 during design and testing. This photo clearly shows what must have been the original intent of the large key fob. In the photo the key is integral to the fob, with the fob actually being the handle of the key. Picture in your mind a jack-knife with the key being the blade of the knife, and the knife limited to opening to 90 degrees only. I suspect the key would fold away into the fob for carrying in a pocket or purse.

This design must have been even more prone to accidental turn off. Although it looks really cool in the photo.
