YES, I was wrong to drive the car home - YES. Did I want to avoid detection - Yes. I believe that was obvious from my post. I was driving 600 miles I didn't want to fly home and do this at a later time. I think the other mistake I made was buying the car out of state, although I did everything I could to check the car out beforehand. As far as the comment about owning a car for free and that being an indicator of my mindset, sure I thought about it, and I think you or anyone else would have at least thought about it and if you deny that I think your lying to yourself. JTMav are you telling me that a thought like this has never gone through your mind?? Please, (LOL)! It was a unusual situation that probably happens rarely, if at all - and that was the point of my first post. My decision was poor to drive the car home - I did it for one day and parked it until it was legal, he did it for 18 months. My other choice was to fly home, I'm not justifying myself, it was simply the choice I made. But I did not plan on going to buy a car that was not titled, frankly I would have never anticipated that situation, would you?

AeroLady: He got the MSO directly from the dealership and he had a lien on the car and was suppose to title (and surrender the MSO to IN DMV) and then the title would have been forwarded to the lienholder, but he felt with the equity in the car he didn't need to forward the title to the lienholder so he kept the MSO and took his chances on being stopped. Obviously, the dealer must have put lien info on the MSO because he had to have a lien release to get the clear title. He said they wanted it anyway, but he said he didn't care with the equity they had in the car he felt that was sufficient, and he did this because in Indiana you can pay $25 and have your title in 7 days, which he felt was better than the 4 weeks that it can take for the lienholder to get the title to him. He said he keeps cars for a short period and thats the way he likes to do it. As far as the car being stolen, all the documentation was there including the PDI in his name that was given at the time of delivery and I called the dealership BEFORE getting on the plane and talked to the Saab dealer service advisor and mechanic and they were familiar with the car and pulled the service history on the car and it all checked out.

Frankly, if you disagree with my handling of the $300 (and many of you do) thats fine. I think its interesting that so many of you think I bought the car on the cheap and because I 'practically stole it from him' I should give him the money back. So if I was an idiot and paid $5k more would keeping the $300 be OK? With many of you I doubt it and thats where we part company, because not having the use of the car and my time are worth something REGARDLESS OF THE PRICE I PAID. Let this be a lesson to all to ask a seller of a used car if they have titled the car or are still holding the MSO. Thankyou, for all your replies.
