I have not heard of this on a 9-5 yet but two things make me suspect it.
1) Past personal experience with broken timing chains/sprockets on two cars. Both acted just as you described.
2) Lack of power brakes. The front engine cam drives a vacuum booster pump for the power brakes system. In order for there to be no vacuum assist you would have to lose normal engine vacuum (a poorly running engine may cause it) AND this booster pump would have to be non-functional. Assuming you have an automatic tranny - your message didn't say.
I hope I am wrong as these engine are interference engines, i.e. pistons hit the valves when valve timing is wrong, and this would probably be a very costly repair.
