CA to NC cross country fuel econ report Posted by Ken [Email] (#2113) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ken) on Sat, 30 Jun 2001 13:45:24 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My wife and I just completed driving from Monterey, CA to Winston-Salem, NC, with one more leg left to Norfolk (military move). She drove her 2001 wagon, and I drove my 1999 sedan. Both have the 4 cylinder engines with manual transmission. Every time we filled up for gas I reset the trip odometer, and the MPG on the SID. After seeing the low twenties while driving around town, it was nice to see what kind of mileage they could get on the open road. The sedan fluctuated between 30.5 and 31.6 mpg calculated, while the SID was constantly higher by 1-2 mpg. The wagon had a Thule ski box on top, so it only got 26-27 mpg calculated, with the SID only about 1 mpg off, sometimes high sometimes low. I guess the difference between calculated and the SID could have been the cutoff settings from different gas stations, or the fact that I topped off sometimes, which pushed in an extra half-gallon. Our average speed was probably around 70 mph, depending on the construction and speed limits.
We only saw one other 9-5 wagon, and no 9-5 sedans. I guess none of you were on I-40 this past week. Any specific questions about long-duration driving, post or send an e-mail!
