What kind of bike racks are you using? I haven't tried 4 bikes on my car, but I have carried 2 and a Yakima SpaceBooster, whch is 22 inches wide. There was no problem, but it was a bit tight. You have to make sure the pedals don't clash.
I am sure I could carry 4 on my 48 inch bars. I use fork mount trays - if you need to, you can alternate them front/ rear and get extra handlebar clearance. If you have to carry the front wheels on top of the car also, this will not work without wider crossbars.
