I owned a 97 Outback for 115k miles and currently own two 9-5's and cost wise I don't think there is that much of a money difference in maintaining the two different brands.
These are some of things outside of normal maintenance that I had to have fixed during my Outback ownership:
-alternater replaced
-all of the oil seals had to be replaced because the oil was leaking
onto the exhaust causing a big stink. After about another 40k the seals started leaking again
-oil pump replaced
-water pump replaced
-starter replaced
-dashboard lights had to be replaced - a pain
-rotors warped several times and had to be replaced
-cv boots and joints replaced
-timing belt replaced - normal maintenance item
-it requires ultra expensive platinum spark plugs. Saab plugs are cheap!
-exhaust shroud started rattling. I did not fix it.
I've heard of head gasket problems with these cars but I didn't have one
My 99 9-5 has 66k on it and has had:
2 SID's replaced under warranty
some TSB work done early on - ECU replaced, Banjo Bolt, PVC mods etc..
DIC replaced
thermostat replaced
Serpentine Belt and pulleys replaced as a precaution
The left rear shock has just started leaking and needs replacing soon
My 02 9-5 has 25k on it and has required only scheduled maintenance.
The things that I didn't like about the Outback was that it was slower, boring to drive, the seats were very uncomfortable to me after about an hour of driving, plus mediocre gas mileage. You do have more scheduled maintenance with the Saabs but you get a much more pleasant driving experience with more power and comfort in return.
