With any higher mileage car your relationship with your mechanic becomes paramount. So get it inspected at an independent or the dealer. Ask your local dealer for a copy of the factory service history, they might be co-operative or not, even if you have the inspection done at an indy.
Many folks, especially Europeans, believe that it's not the mileage, but the service history that matters. A '99 with 96k could be in much better shape than a newer car with half the mileage. Does it have all the service records or is it a mystery car? Who's been doing the maintenance and what do they say about the car?
At 96k it should have another 100k of reliable, but not neccessarily trouble free, miles left.
It should be a good value too. I'd estimate a dealer would pay around $5k ish for the car as a trade in. Maybe more if it's a local dealer serviced car. KBB.com is the source, trade in at "fair" condition being the benchmark, they also say a private party transaction in "good" condition would be $8,900 ish.
Does it have the premium package with the memory seats and the HK sound? That'd be nice, but not essential.
Great car and as I always say, "All the cool people drive wagons."
